The Sarah Waliaula Community Initiative is a non-profit organization, based in Busia County. With a vision to see students of selected schools in Busia County study with dignity, purpose and hope. WE create opportunities for holistic development through three key areas: ICT, Career Guiding and Counseling and Underwear’s & Sanitary Towels for all.
Computer studies can tap into students’ interest in technology, helping them become technology innovators. Teachers can build on these skills, allowing students to design technical solutions to problems in science, math, social studies, the arts, and literacy.Computer learning programs give students the opportunity to expand their horizons to learn skills they would not have the opportunity to acquire in the traditional classroom. Computer proficiency is increasingly indispensable in every job sector. This style of learning allows teachers to include multiple methods for offering useful content to students. Computers can be useful in terms of sharing assignments, indulging various activities, etc. It also helps in maintaining real-time communication experiences irrespective of the distance, and enhances knowledge. Computers play a vital role in every field. They aid industrial processes, they find application in medicine; they are the reason why software industries developed and flourished and they play an important role in education. This is also why the education system has made computer education a part of school curriculum.
Tens of thousands of kids don’t have access to clean underwear and Sanitary Towels. Many children whose families struggle to make ends meet come to school with nothing at all, because they don’t have enough pair to get them through the week. Such scenarios can be humiliating—and even scary for students who are frightened a teacher or classmate can smell or tell what they’re missing. By working to ensure that all children have access to the daily dignity of clean underwear, we promote the conditions of success every student deserves – from basic hygiene and better attendance to brighter outlooks about themselves and the world around them. Undies are often easy to overlook but we believe those little layers can lead to greatness.

Most people recognize the critical link between the important foundation which Nursery,pre-school and primary education provides, and the level of success in education students will experience later on. Those first formative years are essential to a child’s education and development as a whole. The Kenyan government recognizes this link and encourages communities to set up local nursery,pre-schools and primary. However, with no financial support, the reality is that Nursery, pre-schools are almost always run on a voluntary basis without any resources, and most teachers work for free, often in buildings which are unsuitable and even unsafe for children. Dorothy Schwartz Community Centre is making a difference to early education by ensuring that the Nursery,pre-schools and Primary are equipped with the essential components necessary to providing this project: enthusiastic teachers, varied learning resources, a fun place to learn, and coordinated support at a senior level. DSCC is providing a benefit to hundreds of young children, providing local employment to pre-school teachers, helping communities to look after their most vulnerable youngsters. The school is located in Mukuru Slum, which is the second largest in Kenya, second only to the Kibera slums, which is considered one of the largest slums in the world. Within the Mukuru Slums there is a population of slightly over one million people where access to clean water, sanitation, education and medical facilities is at its lowest. It is these conditions that made us initiate the idea of starting education programs within these slums. The school is named after an American retired medical nurse who came to visit as a volunteer and later became part of the school. Through her networks, the school now offers High School Scholarships to successful DSCC graduates.
